How Virtual Reality and Esports Are Redefining the Future of Shooting Sports

The shooting sport has for decades been defined by the stillness of the physical range, the crack of a firearm and the intense, solitary focus of elite marksmen. But the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) is looking far beyond the traditional firing line to capture the imagination of a new generation that is native to the digital world. The ISSF is making sport accessible, interactive and exciting for youth globally by adopting the latest technological innovations such as virtual reality and esports. Importantly, the global strategy is built on a core philosophy: digital innovations are made to enhance traditional shooting sport, not to replace it.

These modern platforms are a vibrant bridge, offering new opportunities to reach new audiences, while maintaining the discipline, precision and focus that are the sport’s rich heritage.

The ISSF has been leading the way in Esports development by forming a dedicated Esports Committee and being an integral part of the first Olympic Esports Series in Singapore.

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) took part in the inaugural—and ultimately final—Olympic Esports Series, a landmark initiative launched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bridge the worlds of traditional sport and digital competition.

As part of the Olympic Esports Week held in Singapore in June 2023, the ISSF collaborated with the IOC to present shooting in a virtual format, allowing competitors to engage with the discipline through a specially designed "ISSF Challenge" built within the digital environment of Fortnite rather than a conventional firing range.

This participation marked a significant step for the ISSF, as it sought to reach new, younger, and more digitally connected audiences while preserving the core values of precision, focus, and sportsmanship that define shooting sports. The inclusion of ISSF-governed shooting alongside other virtual disciplines such as cycling, sailing, archery, and motorsport underscored the IOC's broader vision of using esports as a gateway to introduce Olympic sports to a global online community.

Although a second edition of the Olympic Esports Series was planned for 2024, it did not take place, as the IOC instead decided to replace the series with a new, standalone event called the Olympic Esports Games.

Consequently, the 2023 Singapore event remains the only edition of the Olympic Esports Series, representing for the ISSF a strategic milestone in exploring how digital technology can complement and expand the traditional competitive shooting landscape on the world stage.

Looking ahead, the ISSF is committed to being at the heart of this digital evolution, working closely with the International Olympic Committee to help shape the vision for a future Esport Olympic Games. The digital embrace is to inspire a new generation of fans, creating massive global awareness and ultimately funnelling interest back to physical sport.

Meanwhile, the Olympic Games Paris 2024 had a focus on tradition and technology. Visitors to the ISSF’s hospitality house in Châteauroux were among the first to experience an exclusive virtual reality shooting platform. The immersive technology, developed in a ground-breaking partnership with Breaking Studio, serves as a highly inclusive preparatory tool for newcomers and people of varying physical abilities.

The digital experience features several environments, including training, battle and championship modes in rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines.

Beyond its recreational functions, this virtual shooting range can be deployed to various locations such as school sports days, downtown fairs and exhibitions. In addition to these functions, the shooting range's location can attract corporate team-building events by providing an alternative attraction to the physical shooting ranges that can offer safer and more modern alternatives to the traditional shooting facilities.

The commercial potential of the virtual reality ecosystem offers new opportunities for marketing and sponsoring events within this platform. The virtual reality environment allows for partners to place their branding within the digital environment, such as placing advertisements within the shotgun range and the final hall. Also, the ISSF has created a hardware system for participating nations to purchase full kits of virtual Shotguns and pistols, as well as travel cases for those shotguns and pistols. The annual licensing model of the software allows sporting bodies to invest in the virtual reality equipment with confidence in its future development and availability.

For a National Federation to integrate these digital initiatives with their physical shooting program, they will need to develop a roadmap that outlines how to convert the digital interactions into physical interactions.

Phase 1 of this plan would be to acquire virtual reality technology and deploy it at various locations throughout the nation. These virtual reality gaming kits would enable the National Federation to set up mobile shooting range facilities at locations like universities, shopping malls and corporate events. Also, the National Federation would use the in-game advertisements on these virtual reality games to attract local telecommunications companies to sponsor their program.

In the second phase of growth for the national federation, it must focus upon digital integration into its activities and the activation of grassroots competitions. These digital competitions will take place throughout the nation, utilising the platform's various game modes to create events similar in nature and excitement to the global competitions that have taken place previously. Also, these events can be broadcast live onto popular streaming platforms to draw in the existing gaming community, encouraging those people to participate in these competitions and develop a reputation as digital marksmen within their region. The growth of such a community will allow young people to compete with others of similar interests and skills, forming a dedicated fanbase for the digital sports that may not have ever participated in traditional shooting line sports.

The final phase of the national plan will be the execution of the digital-to-physical transition pipeline. The ISSF will use the top performances in the virtual Championship modes as a metric to invite the best digital athletes to attend transition camps where they will meet with the federation's elite physical coaches. These digital champions and physical coaches will work together to translate the digital skills of the digital athletes into physical skills that can be practised with laser rifles or small-bore firearms.
